Our Raydon Virtual Driver (RVD) Driving Simulator System includes both the RVD Driver Training Simulator and a proprietary Performance Assessment Scoring System (iPass) software. The RVD, a high-fidelity driving simulation system was designed and developed specifically for use in driver education classes.  It is designed to enhance the novice driver's learning experience, provides the opportunity to spend extended time "behind the wheel", driving in realistic situations in a safe environment, without the expense or time constraints associated with road drive time. The RVD ensures that student time in driver education classes can be used to develop specific skills and knowledge that will be required when the students begin to drive in the "real world".  The opportunity to repeat both introductory information and driving exercises increases the likelihood that a student will acquire important driving skills, driving-related information, and situational awareness.  Using the RVD driver training system, the student is able to come in contact with a wide variety of traffic scenarios and environmental conditions, and to practice appropriate responses to these and other challenges without being put in physical danger. The RVD system provides each student with self-paced interactive instruction, which allows for as much practice as required to ensure development of well-learned techniques and habits.  Safety and awareness are the focal points of every driver education class.  Repetition of the task has been shown to be a prime factor in knowledge acquisition.
Introducing Defensive Driving The need for defensive driving is clearly demonstrated each time a driver sets out on the road.  The following are just a few of the unexpected situations drivers may encounter during even the briefest ride: Other drivers swerving to avoid a problem that may or may not be visible to those around them The approach of emergency vehicles, and the response of other drivers to their presence Sudden appearance in the street of pedestrians, children, or cyclists Drivers who run stop signs or cross an intersection against the traffic lights Drivers who drift outside their lane Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, are not in full control of their vehicles. The Virtual Defensive Driving Course provided on the RVD simulator provides ample opportunity to assess and reinforce many of the skills and abilities that are essential to defensive driving.  These include, but are not limited to, the following: Understanding traffic regulations, signs, lights, and other controls, and appropriate responses to their rules and requirements Eye-Hand coordination and reaction time Ability and timing in reaction to changing traffic situations Multi-tasking Ability to "measure" distance to other traffic, as well as speed of the driver's own vehicle and that of other vehicles sharing the road.
